Criminals are usually caught by missing the fine details — leaving little clues, divulging plans where they can be overheard, &c. Sometimes, it's the big details they overlook: a credit card scammer installed a fake ATM in a hotel, in order to steal card numbers from Las Vegas tourists, but they neglected to note that Defcon was taking over the building. Defcon, as you may know, is the famous hacking conference, who rather quickly recognized the handiwork of a careless white-collar criminal. On the other hand, though, this does sound like just the kind of prank a Defcon attendee might do themselves, given the intricacies of position the ATM to avoid cameras andbe close to the security office, and mysteriously appear just before Defcon started - most years include some prank which exposes attendees' security flaws, like the infamous Wall of Sheep. This is unlikely though: Defcon attendees are generally more than ready to take responsibility for suck tomfoolery.
