"Hi, um, is this customer service for Proactiv?"
"Sorry, this is Lincoln Mutual; you must have a wrong number."
"I'VE got a wrong number?!!?"
Her emphasis on "I've" makes me wonder - does she really think that the guy who answered the phone has the wrong number? I affirm her error, and she hang up. Oh well. Proactiv customer calls are very common after 4:00 in my office; the number is very close to ours.
I remember reading about a mother who wanted to raise her kids to be quick thinkers, adept at stepping into a brand new situation and adjusting rapidly. One way she did this was by handing the phone to one of her kids when a wrong number call came in whispering to them,"You're ______ today." Just to see how long they could keep a conversation going./// We get a lot of wrong numbers where the caller just clams up after we say hello. Unless it's a lot of automated calls to record the time of day when someone's home to pick up the phone.
