Yeah!! Happy Birthday Gerbil. Long may you wave. The gerbils my older daughter, Sophie has kept, well, they're jealous (albeit posthumously so) on account of the fact that Destiny's is allowed to roam freely on a table. For just photo ops or for a zesty well rounded life in general?//Life in a cage must get mighty old.//When I was hiking on the Appalachian Trail in the Great Smoky Mnts. the shelters had chain link fences in front of them (even w/ the drip line of the roof) and we'd close ourselves into them at night. The bears roamed freely. The humans were caged! Only saw one bear and he wasn't hanging around for a full inspection. Lighting out for the territories I suspect.

The gerbil is allowed on the table during cleanings, which usually adds up to an hour or so of running and peeking over the edges; for playtime, he is allowed many other places. Sometimes he's allowed to take a short run through the apartment (with an attendant close behind). He's allowed most anyware in the apt, provided he's got someone with him. Gerbil has no interest in escaping or hiding -- he's just curious, so under the fridge or stove are off-limits more for safety reasons than worry of him disappearing. Leave him alone long enough, he comes over to see what you're doing. A very happy gerbil he is!
