Derek Recommends:

radio show: Dale Connelly Reporting

This kicks The Onion's ass. Talented writing & strange humor makes this an excellent show - every single week I snicker at something, ranging from space squid to feuding reporters, to brain sucking, I can't help but laugh out loud.

Unless you've used a soldering iron inside your computer, you've never really worked on your computer.

Derek Recommends:

software: Napster

I couldn't get it to work under Win95, but now that I upgraded to Win98, it works wonderfully. First download: Cake, "The Distance".

We were running early this morning, so I figured I could slip in a quick run to the bank before dropping Destiny off.

While waiting at the auto-teller, Destiny was impressed with her reflection in the teller windows. As I stuffed my check and deposit slip into the carrier and sent it off to the teller, Des waved her hands madly, just to see the mirror-Destiny wave from her car seat too. The teller saw her gesturing, and sent out a sucker with my deposit receipt.

Negotiating the receipt and the sucker proved to be too much of a distration. After dropping Destiny off, I noticed that the cartridge from the drive-up window was still sitting in the seat next to me.

My parents are in town for a visit. I learned my packrat mentality from them; I dislike throwing anything away. Piles of papers are strewn about my room, the storage space is full of boxes, and I keep every receipt.

The first place my parents stopped when they arrived in town was at my home, to unload.

They had packed boxes and boxes of my old toys and clothes, dating back to the early 70s. Destiny will be the coolest retro-child around. Wooden blocks, original Tinker Toys, early Sesame Street puzzles, a Pong clone, "Happy Days" t-shirts, Star-Wars memorabilia, all for her.

I went through all the piles, bags, and boxes, remembering flashes of my youth. I am amazed that the puzzles still had all their pieces, and there are still full sets of Viewmaster reels (with booklets), even after all these years. I re-discovered things I had forgotten about long ago. The toys that I played with and tossed into the toybox with complete disregard were carefully sorted, re-assembled, and stored for all these years. My parents have moved several times, but the boxes of toys had always followed.

I sat on the couch, long after Destiny went to bed, looking at 3-D images of Scooby Doo foiling the evil plans of a bad guy.
